Some prehistory of CARME: Visual language and visual thinking

This chapter considers some antecedents of the themes and topics of CARME from the perspective of the history of data visualization. It does so in relation to two historical narratives that gave rise to modern data graphics: the development of an expressive and now computational language of graphics and successes in visual thinking for explanation and scientific discovery.
